Scandinavian Cultural Center/Chicago

Spring 2018

This project is a design for a Scandinavian cultural center in downtown Chicago, located at Dearborn and Polk st. This design was inspired by the Kalmar Art Museum in Sweden with its simplistic and intriguing designs. The wood cladding over the opaque facade creates a unique and interesting design wrapped around the building. Along with materials and geometry that is common to Scandinavian design. The words walls located on the east and west facades are a typography of the different Scandinavian country names and sayings in their respective languages. This typography walls translates on the interior as well with a word wall covering the floating second floor mezzanine library. The cultural center offers a Scandinavian cuisine restaurant, along with a library, ballroom, conference rooms, a coffee bar, meeting rooms and a rooftop garden. This space is designed to be inclusive and promote the culture of Scandinavian living.
